This morning I finally convinced Mr. H. and Girl to walk by the lake with me. I enjoyed sharing the walk with Boy, and knew they would enjoy it to, but I also knew that my daughter's three-(almost four)-year-old legs would not tolerate the four mile walk from our house to my favorite spot by the lake, and that she is getting too heavy for even Mr. H. to carry for too long. So we packed up the kids and Mr. Giles and drove over to the lake park which cut nearly two miles off of the trip.
Boy wore his eleven cloak that he wore when he was Frodo for Halloween. Girl wore a purple feather boa which was quickly shed and spent the remainder of the trip in my pocket. The most memorable part of the trip, however, took place about halfway down the path. Girl stopped to examine something, then ran to catch up with us. She tripped on a tree root, and landed face first on another tree root.
She wasn't badly hurt. She had some scrapes and bruises, one prominent one just under her right eye. She cut her the inside of her lip on her teeth. It was a very superficial cut, but you know how badly things in that area bleed. It was her first real bloody injury, but she gets upset by the tiniest bug bites. So the minute I looked at her and saw that my little girl had a mouthful of blood (which quite honestly made her look like Claudia from Interview with a Vampire) that she did not seem to know about, my only thought was: "Do not let her know!"
So Mr. H. and I tried to clean her up, check that it was not serious and block Boy from seeing her so he wouldn't freak out, which would make her freak out.
Thankfully we were successful and we continued on our walk, with me occasionally wiping a drip of blood from the corner of her mouth.
Otherwise we had a wonderful time, skipping stones (or trying to) and screaming at the echo. Boy was happy because he saw a Killdeer and a log full of turtles. Girl was happy because she discovered echoes, and I was happy because everyone was having so much fun in the spot that gives me so much pleasure.
